Saving for the Unexpected and Your Future: Questions to Ask Yourself Now

A recent article posted on the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) consumer resource center shares some important questions that can help with setting and achieving savings goals.

To start with, a good question to ask yourself is “Do I have savings goals?”.  If not, that is a great place to start.  What do you need to save for, and how much should you save? Consider short term needs such as a vacation or home improvements.  And what about family needs such as children’s college or an event such as a wedding?

And as you start to create your savings plan, ask yourself “How can I spend less?”.  By taking steps to track spending, review past expenses, and considering “wants vs. needs” you can start to determine ways to spend less and free up more money to save.

In fact, here’s another question to ask: “Am I saving money on a regular basis?”.  Yes, savings can be a part of your monthly budget as a separate line item.  You can schedule automatic savings through online banking, or you may even be able to allocate money to savings through payroll.  And don’t forget retirement savings or retirement options through your employer.

For questions such as “Where should I put my savings” and “Am I saving enough for retirement” you may want to reach out for expert guidance.  The answers will depend on your specific savings needs and goals.
