Received A Text Message Demanding Arizona Toll Payments?

It’s a SCAM!

If you’ve received a text message (or multiple text messages) saying that you owe toll payments with directions to a website for payment, don’t do it!

I’ve received two such texts in the past 24 hours!

When I visited the MVD Services website https://azdot.gov they have posted a scam alert and warning.

Their website states:

Latest incarnation of social engineering attack mentions ‘AZDOT’

PHOENIX – No, the Arizona Department of Transportation isn’t texting you about overdue tolls.

Here are just some of the clues that a text going around mentioning “AZDOT” and demanding money is a scam:

  • The state highway system doesn’t have toll roads.
  • The phone number associated with this text is from another country.
  • The website address listed includes azdot.gov but continues into another domain that screams “scam.”
  • We go by ADOT, not AZDOT, in second reference.
  • We tend to avoid broken English such as “Now Payment.”

Visit their website here for more information: That text is a scam: ADOT isn’t after you for delinquent tolls | Department of Transportation

The text is attention getting, and especially if you have done any recent traveling, it might be tempting to check it out.  Ironically, we just recently received an authentic toll charge from a trip we took several months ago.  But we checked with the rental car company to confirm.  And, it came through our Visa Card as previous toll charges have posted.  Not an Arizona charge.

Don’t click that link!

One way to keep on top of authentic charges and fees is to regularly monitor your account and credit cards, as well as your credit report. As a financial coach, I help people learn how to monitor their accounts and their credit reports and understand what to watch for.
