Book Review: Soundtracks, The Surprising Solution to Overthinking
In his book “Soundtracks” Jon Acuff talks about how we overthink so much, that we inhibit our ability to soar. In chapter one he quotes Navy SEAL David Groggins with “The most important conversations you’ll ever have are the ones you’ll have with yourself…” I can attest to many sleepless nights over the years running words through my head in endless cycles accomplishing virtually nothing.
Jon lays out this plan to create new soundtracks to transform your life:
- Retire your broken soundtracks.
- Replace them with new ones.
- Repeat them until they’re as automatic as the old ones.
Throughout the book Jon will provide a path of action to help us determine what is truth. Is your soundtrack true, helpful and kind? Jon makes this great point: “Ask yourself this: If I repeatedly told my friend this, would they still want to be my friend?” Jon provides action steps to help us quiet our soundtracks and learn to flip them and start playing the opposite message in our mind.
When you find yourself in the next stressful situation, ask yourself this question: “Am I focusing on the problem or the solution?”. What can I do that will make the situation better? We need to retrain our soundtracks.
One of my favorite quotes in his book is this: “Fear comes free. Faith takes work.” One of his action steps was to tell himself this: “Everything is always working out for me”. Even when he thought it wasn’t. Over time he began to actually see things working out for him. It reminds me of the movie “Santa Clause” where elf Judy tells Scott “Believing is seeing”.
At the end of the book, he challenges us with a 30-day exercise to help retrain our thoughts. The antidote for change is action, and “everything you want is on the other side of new actions”.
Not only did I enjoy Jon’s book because it was true (I could relate more than I care to admit), but it was also funny! He includes his own stories that helps make me feel normal and not just a little bit crazy. And if I am just a little bit crazy, that’s ok too.
His real-life stories helped me see we all think things that are not true. We all allow fears to inhibit our joy and prevent us from accomplishing great things. What we tell ourselves can turn our life into an awesome adventure!

Think about this: “Good days start with good thoughts.”
And that’s truth!
