Preparing Financially and Emotionally for Retirement

Preparing Financially and Emotionally for Retirement

Occasionally I have the opportunity to meet with someone as they prepare to exit the work environment and enter retirement. The road ahead can be daunting if a financial plan is not in place. I have people tell me they are feeling anxious and request guidance. Thoughtful planning is key to ensuring both financial stability and personal fulfillment after retirement.

Here are a few steps to get started:

  • Start with budget planning: identify essential expenses, potential income sources like Social Security or pensions, and assess your savings. Factor in inflation and plan for at least 25–30 years of post-retirement life.
  • Consider how you’ll spend your time. Retirement offers freedom, but without structure, it can feel aimless. Whether it’s volunteering, hobbies, travel, or part-time work, meaningful activities are essential for well-being.
  • Don’t underestimate medical costs. Supplement Medicare with additional coverage and build a fund for out-of-pocket expenses, including long-term care, which can be a major financial burden.
  • Estate planning is also vital. Ensure your will, power of attorney, and healthcare directives are current. Consider trust or beneficiary updates to protect your legacy and ease burdens on loved ones.
  • Finally, think beyond money: what brings you fulfillment? A purposeful retirement aligns finances with values, relationships, and passions.

With intentional planning across these areas, you can retire with confidence.  Ready not just to rest, but to thrive.

After a recent coaching session, I received this feedback:

  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Lisa. She is knowledgeable and professional. I felt much more confident about my upcoming retirement after speaking with her. She answered all my questions and made recommendations that suited my needs and personality while achieving my goals.
