Tucson Federal Credit Union (TFCU) partnered with the Sunnyside Unified School District (SUSD) to host a food drive at all seven branches and the corporate office. The Ultimate Savings Deposit Food Drive brought in over 4,100 items of food to benefit children identified as homeless by the Sunnyside McKinney-Vento program.
About the program:
During the 2014-2015 school year, over 1,200 students were identified as homeless in SUSD.
The SUSD McKinney-Vento Program works with the schools to provide free lunches for these students.
During the 2014-2015 school year, 84% of the student population qualified for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
McKinney-Vento removes barriers that may keep students from attending school. This can be in the form of transportation, school supplies, shoes, and uniforms. With the help of donations from the community, the SUSD McKinney-Vento program is able to provide additional meals and clothing to these students. The assistance they provide helps these children focus on their education rather than their next meal.
