Tucson Federal Credit Union’s extensive Financial Education Program has once again earned the credit union recognition, this time through youth and adult program and education awards for 2011. TFCU was awarded first place in the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Service category, second place in both the Desjardins Youth and Adult categories, and honorable mention in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award.
The awards are presented by the Mountain West Credit Union Association, the regional trade association representing 154 member credit unions and 3.2 million credit union members throughout Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming.
The Louise Herring Award is given for extraordinary, internal programs that focus on membership and create services that benefit members. TFCU’s first place finish was a result of their student-run Eagle Branch, located within Santa Rita High School. The judges thought the branch to be an excellent example of the credit union philosophy in action, while providing members access to a better future. TFCU' will now compete nationally against other state-winners of this award.
The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award recognizes leadership within the credit union on behalf of youth and adult financial literacy. Their Youth Financial Education Award recognizes credit union efforts in teaching personal finance concepts and skills to members and nonmembers under age 18; while their Adult Education Award focuses on programs for those 18 and older. TFCU’s second place finishes in both categories were in consideration of their Financial Education Programs for both students and adults.
Since the program’s inception in 2002, TFCU has taught the importance of financial responsibility to well over 40,000 students! The award-winning curriculum is comprised of five programs for students in kindergarten through high school; all of which satisfy portions of the economic strands of the Arizona State Social Studies Standards. Their free adult courses can be tailored to fit audience needs and can be delivered on-site, in English or Spanish, for maximum convenience.
